Mr Louis Hendy
Sherbrooke, January 19, 2025
Mr Louis Hendy ( 1950 -2025 )
Louis Hendy, second born of 7 siblings, passed away peacefully, after a long illness, at the age of 74 in Sherbrooke, Quebec, on January 19, 2025.
He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Cecile Hendy, and his sister, June, and is survived by his siblings, George (Diana), Sandra (Serge Proulx), Joyce (Ron Taylor), Gary (Natalie) and Robert, as well as 10 nephews and nieces and their 9 children.
Louis was enthusiastically athletic in his youth, loved music, and very intelligent, having graduated from Bishop’s University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1972. Shortly afterwards, he was diagnosed with schizophrenia, which prevented him from seeking gainful employment, and required medication for the rest of his life.
Louis had his ups and downs dealing with his affliction until Dad passed away and then realized Mom needed help. With regular medication and self-determination, his life improved and his kindness and helpfulness were there for others to benefit from. He remained close to his family throughout, attending all gatherings for decades, including the annual Hendy family 3-day Xmas reunion. Louis was the Cool Uncle to his nieces and nephews.
Louis was a lifelong friend to many of his childhood peers and was beloved by them as a good man with a sense of purpose, generosity and kindness, whose smile could light up a room.
Despite his limited means, Louis found a way to save money and donate to his church and alma mater.
On the day before he passed, Louis was surrounded by his extended family (some present and others calling in from as far away as Ontario, Tennessee and London, England). Louis shared stories and memories with us on that occasion, lucidly and in good spirits.
When we bade him goodbye that day, we knew it was forever, which was very difficult for all of us.
Special thanks are owed to Sandra and her daughter, Amélie, for the help and support they provided to Louis in the final months of his life. The family also thanks the radio-oncology and palliative care teams at the CHUS (notably, Drs. Pavic and Nabid), Dr. Gagne (his GP), Dr. Ferland and the CLSC team, as well as the palliative care team of the Hôtel-Dieu hospital, for the kind and compassionate care and attention they provided Louis in his final months and days.
A memorial service for Louis will be held on April 12 at 11:30am at the St-Ephrem Church (150, 13th Ave. South, Sherbrooke), with visitations on April 11 from 7 to 9 pm and April 12 from 9:30 to 11:00am at the Steve Elkas funeral home (601 Conseil St., Sherbrooke).
