Dr. Margaret Lee Smart MacLeod (Mera)          1928 – 2026

 Dr. Margaret Lee Smart MacLeod (Mera) passed away peacefully on August 17, 2026 in Ottawa, Ontario in her 99^th year.

Mera was born on August 7, 1928 in Invergordon, Scotland to Christina and Vincent Lee. As her father served in the Royal Navy, Mera and her family lived in many different places throughout Scotland and England during her childhood.  Mera attended medical school at the University of Edinburgh, where she met and married Hamish Matheson Smart. Mera and Hamish emigrated to Sherbrooke, Quebec in 1953.  Mera practiced medicine as a general practitioner and anesthesiologist at the Sherbrooke Hospital for over 40 years.  She was dedicated to her profession and to the many patients and families she served throughout her career.

Following Hamish’s death in 1978, Mera married Dr. Jack MacLeod.  They remained together until his death in 1998.  Mera will be lovingly remembered by her daughters: Susan (l. Randy Baker) of North Augusta, South Carolina; Mhairi (Steve Rowland) of Russell, Ontario; Norma (Brian Stickles) of West Bury, Quebec; Joanne (Paul Hayes) of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She will also be dearly missed by her 12 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.  Mera was predeceased by her daughter Irene (l. Bob Kenneth).

Mera lived a long and extraordinary life, spanning three countries and nearly a century of changing times.  She will be remembered with love by her family and all those whose lives she touched.

A private memorial service will be held a later date.
