In the simplest terms, Andrea Delgado, lovingly known to her family as Lita, was a weaver of community and faith. Born on October 3, 1940, in the vibrant landscape of Los Santos, Panamá, she entered the world in the young hands of her mother, Blasina, who was just 14. Raised by a mother still finding her place in life, Andrea spent much of her childhood journeying through the rich tapestry of Latin America and the Caribbean, nurtured by the warmth of extended family and friends.
Beyond the shores of Panamá, she called Colombia, Jamaica, Haiti, New York City, and other lands her home. Though her upbringing was marked by hardship—a mosaic of poverty and uncertainty—she was buffeted by her faith in God, her love of culture, adventure, and an extraordinary embrace of dance (legend has it that her brother-in-law, William, declared her the finest dancer in Haiti). Above all, she possessed an innate ability to connect with souls from all walks of life.
Her journey led her to Haiti, where fate introduced her to the love of her life, Edouard Stephenson. Their relationship brought forth their beloved daughter, Michèle Stephenson. Together, this small family navigated a life replete with unexpected highs and lows. Andrea found solace and strength in her faith in God and in the vibrant community embrace of Haitians, Latinos, Québécois, and people of all cultures. Her investment in community anchored her to the Eastern Townships, and she never looked back.
Andrea loved to pray, to gather people, to laugh and to dance. Most importantly, she was deeply committed to serving others. She shared stories and listened intently to the needs of others, expressed in many accents; she helped how she could and made room for friends of all backgrounds.
Her home became a crossroads where languages mixed, where memories of Panamá, Haiti, New York City, Latin America, and Canada lived side by side. She did not need wealth or permanence to create belonging; she carried it with her, stitching community together wherever she landed.
